Quad Bike – All Terrain Vehicle Safety

Quad Bike Safety was one of the key areas that we wanted to improve when it came to safety across the farms in Connemara.

We decided to take a 3 pronged approach to tackle:

1) Lack of experience with proper training for all farmers on the scheme who have quads

2) To fit and supply good quality helmets to all farmers on the scheme who have quads

3) To trial the use of roll bars on 3 selected farmers so that we can give a better overview of how each type suits the needs of the farmer and the type of terrain and the type of quad.

Quad Bike Helmets

A Quad Helmet is a vital piece of safety equipment for a quad bike user on the farm.

As part of the scheme all of our farmers signed up to the scheme were fitted and will be getting a suitable quad bike helmet as part of the safety gear that we will be providing to our farmers.
The more farmers that wear them the more the norm changes and the helmet will become a natural go to piece of PPE kit for all quad bike users.

Quad Bike Roll Bars

Roll bars, or operator protective devices, are designed to protect riders from being crushed or pinned underneath the weight of the quad bike in the event of a roll over.
We are piloting three different types of roll over bars with three of our scheme farmers. 
We will be doing a full evaluation of each type to determine the best use for the Connemara terrain.

Quad Bike Training

This one day Quad Bike ATV Training Course  is designed to provide participants with the knowledge, skills and attitude to operate a Quad Bike – All Terrain Vehicle in a competent and safe manner.

Course Content:

  • Legislation

  • PPE.

  • Pre use inspection

  • After start checks

  • Starting and Moving off

  • Safe parking

  • Steering

  • Body Positions

  • Obstacles

  • Descending, Ascending & Traversing Hills

  • Load Capacities
